What is a BaZi chart?
BaZi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese way of writing the moment of birth. The year, month, day and hour each become a pair of one heavenly stem and one earthly branch, giving eight characters in total (ba zi literally means "eight characters"). Each character carries one of the five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water, in its yin or yang form.
The stem of the day pillar is the Day Master. It stands for you, and every other stem in the chart is named by its relationship to it: the ten gods, such as Direct Officer, Eating God or Indirect Wealth. The branches also hold hidden stems, which is why each pillar above lists one to three smaller characters underneath.
Luck pillars describe ten-year chapters that start at an age worked out from the distance between your birth and the nearest solar term. Annual pillars are the stem and branch of each calendar year, and the minor-luck pillars move one step every year of age. Together they form the traditional timeline that practitioners read against the natal chart.
How this calculator works
Months in BaZi do not follow the Gregorian calendar. The Tiger month starts at Li Chun, the solar term around 4 February, and each later month starts at the next solar term. This calculator finds those boundaries astronomically for the time zone you choose, so births close to a term boundary get the right month pillar. If you do not know the birth hour, leave it empty: the hour pillar will be blank and the rest of the chart still works.
The chart comes from the same engine as Vision Studio's apps. This page deliberately shows the chart rather than a judgement of it; readings stay in the app, where they can be explained properly. Like any traditional system, BaZi is a cultural lens, not a scientific forecast.
Frequently asked questions
What is a BaZi chart?
BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) writes your birth year, month, day and hour as four stem-branch pairs: eight characters in all. The day stem is the Day Master, the reference point for the ten gods on the other pillars.
Does this calculator store my birth date?
No. Your details are used once to draw the chart and your data is not stored.
Why are months based on solar terms?
BaZi months start at the solar terms (Li Chun around 4 February opens the Tiger month), not on the 1st of a calendar month, so births near a term boundary can change month pillar.
